While at the American Geographical Society as a scholar-intern, I produced and curated maps for a weekly blog and social media post. Topics I covered ranged from which the emigration of the highly educated to state flowers – depending on organizational interest, topical holidays, or events in the news. I utilized programs including ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, and Tableau.

Maps made using ArcMap, touched up in Adobe Illustrator, and turned into a gif using Adobe Photoshop.

With each map I attempted to develop a distinctive minimal style, to present the data and story as effectively as possible. These were always accompanied by blog posts that further explain the source and methodology of the data, the relevance of the post, and any related news stories such as this post on the Emigration of the Highly Educated.

The World’s Love of Chocolate was posted the same week as Valentine’s Day, while the Flower Power map was a response to Plant Appreciation Day. These maps, along with the map on Emigration of the Highly Educated went out to over 30,000 followers on social media platforms along with subscribers to the organization’s blog, Ubique.
